Moving to the Net: A 4-Ball Approach Drill with the PadelShooter

Padel court map showing net approach drill positions

This drill trains one of the most important movements in padel: getting from the back of the court to a strong net position. It works best with two players taking turns, since the 4-ball sequence is quite intense.

Court setup: machine at position G, aiming toward B

Machine Setup

  • Position: G?B or I?D (standard ball machine position at the back)
  • Training mode: Fixed
  • Speed: 30-40 (adjust to your level)
  • Height: 35 (~1 metre above the net)
  • Frequency: 50

The Drill

Player 1 starts at the back of the court. The machine fires 4 balls in succession:

  1. Ball 1 – Back court return: Let the ball bounce off the back glass, return it, and take a first step forward toward the net.
  2. Ball 2 – Deep volley (fence pos. 3): Take this as a controlled deep volley near the fence. Return the ball and continue moving forward.
  3. Ball 3 – Mid volley: A controlled volley from around mid-court. Aim to make the return difficult for your opponent, then move closer to the net.
  4. Ball 4 – Attacking volley: Close to the net – play an aggressive finishing volley.

After ball 4, player 1 returns to the back and player 2 plays their 4 balls. Alternate until both players have done the desired number of sets.

Make It Harder

Switch from Fixed to Volley or Hor movement (Width = 50, all other settings the same). The machine will now randomise between forehand, body and backhand – forcing you to adapt your footwork as you approach the net, just like in a real rally.

Mode Width Effect
Fixed Same position every ball – focus on movement pattern
Volley 50 Random forehand / body / backhand
Hor movement 50 Horizontal spread – tests lateral footwork
